SG51 AT EAST COAST PARK

Saturday, August 13, 2016

This is my and Seto's second year living in Singapore, our second time for the 9th of August, Singapore's National Day. Last year, when #SG50, we went to Marina Bay Sands, unfortunately we were late and missed the big fireworks. Last year was the special one for Singapore, SG50 was the turning point for this lion city. A half of decade. There was huge celebration, you name it. From street parade to 50% discount at most of the stores (this is my favorite one, aha!).
9 August 2016, Singapore is turning 51. Happy birthday Singapore! The #SG51 celebration is not as huge as last year. But this year we had more fun. Thank you for our Singaporeans best friends, Aldilla and Abang Idham who invited us to join the National Day celebration together with Abang's (just a quarter-he said) huge family.

We've never been to to East Coast Park before until last Sunday he asked us to come if we didn't have any plan on 9th. Lucky me, Seto was having his day off on that Tuesday and our initial plan was going to the same place as last year without the missing fireworks part, please! But going to the new place with all the Singaporeans sounds more tempting and yes we love to explore every new places and every new corners of Singapore, so why not? Then I started to fry my bakwan (Indonesian vegetables and prawn fritter) to bring there as the picnic snack (Dilla was asking me to bring it ahaha), on the grass, surrounded by so many tall coconut trees, with the sands by the beach and sea view. Beach? Does Singapore have beach? Yes dear, this 51 years old country can build anything that they want. I am impressed!

Ah a little tip for those who want to visit East Coast Park, make sure where the exact area of your destination is, in which section. Because c'mon man it is HUGE! We took bus from our house and our direction application directed us to alight at opposite Laguna Park. Then we walked through the (one of) underpass and taaadaaa, 15.30 we arrived already at the section E! I called Abang and ohh yeah the picnic is on section B.
No worries, me and Seto were happy to walk (for 15 minutes only) because after 1 one hour walking there was still no section B. Crrrryyyyy! We were actually can alight at another stop that nearer to the section B, however we change to another bus and walk further instead (the GoThere app can be that not reliable huh?! well, can not blame the app, we should ask more detail though,) I remind you once again, it is huge fellas. Unless you want to exercise, make sure you know where bus stop that you have to alight and where the nearest car park or taxi drop off area. Because the park area itself can not be entered by car or motorbike. You should walk, jog, run, cycle, skate, with your hoverboard, scooter, can be anything except taking your vehicle with you. So bear in mind if you don't like sun, don't like hot, don't like to walk especially to run. A typical cranky lady doesn't like to be sweaty because it's ruining your make up, a typical spoiled grumpy person who goes everywhere with the driver and using high heels. For those who use not proper size foot wear like my pity hubby. Then forget about visiting this place. For those who hold (not with the stroller) their baby, just be careful it will be tiring. And remember to bring your water. No drinking fountains where you can  drink and refill your water bottle there, neither mini market like 7-Eleven or Cheers nearby.
catch pokemon while skating and cycling, why not?!
However we enjoyed it a lot. An hour walking reaching section B was fun. We can see and observe a lot of activities there. This is such a great place to gather with family and friends. We can go walking, jogging, runnning, cycling, bbq-ing, picnic-ing, camping, dining and the most important photo shooting (take selfies or Snapchat it!). Been a half and a year we never see beach, so yesterday was our 'oh' moment. Moment when we realise Singapore do has beaches, please do not expect and compare with Bali especially (which is hard since both of us ever been lived there, haha). But we are happy at least we can see sandy beaches, a relaxing wind blow our hair while looking our country across. Yes it is Batam over there. *wave hands*
the family bike, can cycling together 2 adults, 2 kids
The loooog journey was worth it. After meet Abang, Dilla, and the family there we got plenty of food yeaaaayyyy. The famous laksa and nasi lemak for sure neatly served on the table.  The Satay! From all the mouth watering dishes, our highlight was the SEAFOOD GALORE. wohooooooo! It was so fun!!! I love how his family pack the gathering, with a very long  dining row, like we dine at the long dining table, I had the most memorable seafood eating experience ever. Hahaha, I love their teamwork prepared the base of the picnic mat with the disposable plastic. See, how Seto was trying to help. And how the makciks and Dilla scooped and served all the dancing crab, mussels, threw the baby carrots, baby potatoes and broccoli down and finally when pouring the black pepper and (my all time favorite) salted egg sauce. It was so excited! All busy for the preparation while I just snapped the moments with my camera or maybe pretended to help just to be framed in the picture.
After eating all the cholesterol, we did the exercise which was cycling. Abang and Dila one bike each. Me and my lovely husband always hitchhike, so he can burn more calories pedalling with (my) weight, haha. We cycled nearby. By the time we went back to the picnic area, Abang's family gather at the center and sang the Singapore's national anthem, Majulah Singapura patriotically. Then cheered and waved their hand excitedly when the helicopter who brought a giant Singapore flag (I think also broadcasted the live report from the above) passed us. When like around 30 persons sang, other people around kept they eyes on us, and joined to sing! I wish I could memorise the lyric so I can sing together.
they were sang expressively and proudly, look at the flag that they brought purposely
The sky was getting dark, it was 18.30 already we planned to continue the SG51 celebration at Marina Bay Sands area, unfortunately we can not make it on time (again!) and end up see it from inside the bus instead. (yeaah still OK la, hiks)
Thank you Dilla, especially Abang who let us feel the Singapore National Day vibe :)
